All four of my pieces entered were accepted in to the 2010 Photography Annual Contrasting Landscapes Exhibit at San Joaquin Delta College's LH Horton Jr Gallery. The juror was Carol McCusker, Curator of Photography at the Museum of Photographic Arts (MoPA) in San Diego.

SICA's 7th Annual International Juried Show

My work was one of fifty photographs accepted out of more than 430 entered in to The Shore Institute of Contemporary Arts 7th Annual International Show. The juror for the exhibition was Mary Birmingham, who has been Director of Exhibitions at the Hunterdon Art Museum in Clinton, NJ. She began her career at the Whitney Museum, and for nine years was a member of the curatorial staff of the Montclair Art Museum.

The opening reception for the exhibition is Sunday, September 12, in long Branch, NJ.

Allegany Arts Council, Wills Creek Survey 2010

My piece "Little Giant" has been accepted in the 11th Annual Will's Creek National Survey. The juror for the 11th Annual Will's Creek Survey is Eric C. Shiner. Shiner is the Milton Fine Curator of Art at The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. I was one of thirty-three accepted, out of more than two hundred artists that applied to the exhibition. The opening is September 11, 2010, in Cumberland, Maryland.

Da Vinci Art Alliance 2010

Thank you for submitting your artwork for the Da Vinci Art Alliance’s 2010 juried exhibition, Apocalypse Soon: 2012.

On Tuesday, July 21st, the judge for the exhibition, Elin Danien, Consulting Scholar, University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, viewed over 70 artworks by 31 artists. Ms. Danien closely examined the artworks for aesthetic and thematic approaches. There were so many excellent artworks, that her decision was a very difficult one.

Paris Pinhole Photography Exhibition

I taught a May-mini this June and it was a blast! We had twelve days to make and build cameras, learn to shoot pinholes, explore aesthetic approaches to shooting, learn developing, scanning, Photoshop, printing, matting and framing. Yikes! But it all came together, and it came together for an exhibition at The Gallery on First St. in Paris, Texas. We had great attendance, the work looked terrific and the space is delightful! Oh, and we had plenty of good food!

2010 Provost Award, Research & Creative Activity

Thanks TAMUC! I'm one of nine to receive this year's Provost Award for Research and Creative Activity. (Really I think I got it for the wildest beard, but whatever.) Pictured along with me are Dr. Christine Evans, President Jones and Dr. Alan Headley. It's a terrific honor and and I'm really glad to be working where my efforts are acknowledged, but more importantly, among people that I consider good friends! Thanks!

I Love Paris in the Springtime... Paris Junior College: Solo Exhibition, Lecture, Guest Curator

The exhibition, "Academic Landscapes" opens Tuesday March 30th at 4:30 at the Paris Junior College Art Gallery. There will be an artist lecture at 5:30. The exhibition runs through April 23rd.

I conjunction with the exhibit, “Indirect Objects: Captured Identities” I'll be lecturing at Parkland College in Champaign Illinois, on March 17th.

“Indirect Objects: Captured Identities” includes four artists from around the country: Stafford Hiroshi Smith (Lewisburg, Penn.), Judith Sol-Dyess (Chicago), Liz Murphy Thomas (Springfield, Ill.), and Vaughn Wascovich (Commerce, Tex.). Inherent in their works is the process of documenting how we choose to identify ourselves through clothes, environment, and the architecture that we inhabit. These photographers seem linked both by an interest in using the camera to capture ‘constructed identities’ we attribute to our character and by being able to interpret social culture in a variety of environments.

Artists in this exhibit also take a contemporary approach to photography, working with issues in their own time frame to engage the world in which they live. Smith’s photos depict interpersonal relationships within a family; his latest work reveals an examination of American families and seeks to redefine the family portrait. Wascovich focuses on the physical landscape of higher education. The academic environment is a place for searching for knowledge unhampered by commercial responsibility and full of opportunity. His photographing of these locations without the students and faculty gives the viewer pause: The emptiness and captured light augment a subtle beauty and hopefulness.

On Thursday, February 18th, I'll be lecturing at Sam Houston State University. I think it's an interesting topic, "Finding Meaning in Landscape Photography." I've thought about it quite a bit, and in fact ask my students this same question, though I pose it differently; "What is the value of art for the artist?"

The photo posted here is one of Robert Adams. Both his writing and his photographs has a tremendous influence on my work.

Funny name for a kontest, but it's a great and well-regarded exhibition that I've been wanting to participate in for years. Finally this year I felt that I had something worthwhile to enter, and apparently they did too! The juror was Daile Kaplan of Swann Galleries.
